Jenggala's Gallery Presents

"Natural Flowing"

An Exhibition of Paintings, Ceramics & Glass

by Made Wianta

February 17th 2006 - April 20th 2006

Made Wianta was born on December 20, 1949 in Apuan, Tabanan, Bali. At a very young age, Wianta learned about the traditional painting and discovered early on the style he would like to explore, like ethnic motifs such as batik, beads and decorative patterns. Wianta attended SSRI (The Indonesian Secondary School of Art) in Denpasar from 1966 to 1969. Then he moved to Jogyakarta and attended the Indonesian Institute of Fine Arts (ASRI) and graduated in 1974. After living in Jogyakarta for 4 years, Wianta decided to study the modern and Western Art in Brussels, Belgium. His fascination toward the modern and Western Art grew even more when he uncovered the unique diversity of European art styles.

Wianta is respected for his continuous learning and sense of discovery which has earned him the reputation of being a multi talented artist.

Artworks ranging from painting, batik, music, theatre, dance, poetry, calligraphy to installation work, Wianta is continuously exploring the whole element of art. He says his creative and relentless mind constantly needs ways of expression. Within 20 years of Wianta's artistic career, he has created 14,000 works of art which have been exhibited at prestigious galleries and museums nationally as well as internationally. His exhibitions have been 54 solo exhibitions and 27 group exhibitions held in Asia, Europe and USA, as well as 13 books on Made Wianta published in Indonesia and Singapore. He has received 4 awards of appreciation and recognition from art institutions in Indonesia, Italy and USA that clearly establish Made Wianta as one of most respected and influential artists in Indonesia.

Social issues have also became one of his focuses in achieving a more balance life; where he donates his paintings for charities or auctions to help the less fortunate people in Indonesia.

Wianta is also environmentally conscious and has held art installations/happenings such as "Forrest and Life" in Apuan, Tabanan (1999), "Sound and Nature" in Apuan, Tabanan (1997), "Water, Fire and Air" in Apuan, Tabanan and Gajah Wong River, Jogyakarta, Central Java (1995). He has chosen a variety of mediums to express his inner thoughts and emotions; Wianta is able to create such a universal form of art, which can be recognized and appreciated by many people in many parts of the world.

In his first solo exhibition at Jenggala Art Gallery, Wianta is interpreting the ceramic and glass at Jenggala; by creating free from ceramic shapes and handpainting existing Jenggala ceramic forms as well as presenting a different spectrum to Jenggala glasses by painting rich colors on to glass shapes. Inspired by his travel to beautiful cities around the world, Wianta's solo exhibition at Jenggala portrays the journeys to different places. From his observation on the plane, the land beneath presented him with many space dimensions seen differently than from the ground. Wianta was mesmerized by the light, dew, rain, snow, ocean, beach, lagoon, meadow and tree; different nuances that present deeper meanings and appreciation towards life. Anything that touches his heart and awakens his deepest emotions to continue creating and observing because life doesn't stop at one point and learning has no ending …

Jenggala Art Gallery is proud to present the first solo exhibition of painting,
ceramics and glass of Made Wianta entitled "Natural Flowing".
