Ellen
Hess was born on March 27th, 1957 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania,
USA. She began her artistic study at Horizons, a creative
arts school in California in 1972. Ellen continued to study
painting and sculpture at San Diego, California's Mesa College
where she received a degree in Art in 1977.
In
her final year at Mesa, Ellen went abroad for the first time
to Sri Lanka, where she studied traditional dance and language. Her
first taste of this exotic culture moved her
|
 |
forever off of a mainstream course in life. She discovered
photography as a result of her journey to Sri Lanka. Her photographs
quickly showed her love and appreciation of her subjects from
sharp close-ups of people to artful renderings of the places
she explored. These were still just copies of the world around
her and the creator in her prodded relentlessly for something
beyond the obvious. Ambitious to find more adventure, she
then travelled on to Perth, Australia where she decided to
take Indonesian culture and language at Murdoch University. |
 |
During
her travels, she became a dedicated surfer. Surfing proved
to be the opening she was looking for as it placed her close
to the vast ocean in all its moods. The reflection of water's
movement and texture and the sky and its lights were then
captured on film. This was the discovery her art had always
craved.
Surfing
around the world, but especially in the Indonesian archipelago,
physically cemented her relationship with water and light
in which she had immersed herself.
|
|
In
the past few years since she has realized the potential of
her discovery, she has tirelessly experimented with all types
of water settings, searching for moments of truth. The use
of large format Giclee printing on cotton canvas allows the
textures and movement inherent in water to be fully revealed.
They offer an entrance into the enchanted world of water. |
In
her first solo exhibition at Jenggala Art Gallery, as an emerging
fine art photographer, Ellen exhibits her latest series of
photographs that were primarily taken in Indonesia. Ellen's
latest series of photographs reflect the intuitive mystery
of water. She feels that the more one views her images, the
more they discover the many possibilities within their own
imagination. |
