An Exhibition of Paintings and Hand-painted Ceramics
by Anne Van Borselen

September 14th 2007 - December 7th 2007

Anne Van Borselen was born on June 11, 1937 in Surabaya, Indonesia. She studied art in The Royal Academy of Art, in The Hague and Rotterdam. Anne has been painting for all her life. Her interest in art was first recognized unfavorably by her parents when she was five and made drawings on the walls using charcoal. Her parents were then determined to send Anne to art school. Anne’s artworks, both paintings and sculptures, have been well-liked internationally. Her collectors come from Netherlands, Indonesia, Spain, as well as the USA.

Anne is capable of maximizing effects of the limited choice of acrylic colors she puts on canvas. A humble selection of gray, white, brown and black represents modesty in her artwork. “My paintings can be there or not there”, Anne said, suggesting what she calls a transparent existence of artwork. A beautiful painting does not have to be bright and busy to call for attention, Anne continued, referring to pre-historic paintings found in the French cave of Lascaux.

In some of her other works, however, a choice of carmine red, pink and orange is well-combined with gray to evoke a striking impact. In her ceramic pieces, Anne uses more color variations. A brilliant selection of bold colors has made her ceramic artwork beautifully eye-catching. The Renaissance maestros Angelo and Da Vinci have influence on Anne’s chubby faces and voluptuous human figures.

Whereas some of her abstract forms are inspired by Picasso, who Anne believes is a great master of human anatomy. Abstract forms and figures, Anne said, gives the audience freedom to make their own interpretation of the artwork.

In her exhibition at Jenggala titled Theater, Anne conveys various stories of human figures. Life is a theater; and every individual is a director for their own life. There are good and bad, war and peace, drama and happiness. Grim episodes of life are reflected in the works such as Memories, Walk Away and Trial before Pilate. Whereas in Flew Over the Cuckoos, Need Your Love, and Six Days Seven Nights, gloominess is enlightened with subtle humor or mockery in the childlike if not primitive faces and figures of birds, lambs and dogs.
