Working mostly with mixed media on canvas, Linggih explores
the dynamics of human relationships. He particularly emphasizes
on sexual and emotive tensions between genders. This is depicted
in one of his paintings, in which a banana houses a lifeless
space, symbolically communicates restlessness, solitude, the
longing for love and physical interaction. Linggih has deeply
rooted beliefs and values towards relationships. These values
are strongly communicated through his works. 'For me love is
the greatest attribute possessed by human beings. And what's
interesting about love is...when there is no physical interaction
between the opposite sexes whatsoever, tension is created. This
is how my works are born. It is an imaginative exploration between
men and women…'
While
Wayan Linggih ponders on the complexities of human emotion,
Tilem prefers to use a simple creature as his muse. The duck.
Through his paintings Tilem encourages the audience to 'inhale
the fresh air of prosperity and value the peaceful life possessed
by these social creatures.' His harmonious and simple depiction
of the duck and what it represents corresponds with his visual
portrayal of the animal. 'I am trying to visually translate
a duck, simply as a duck…a being with a wild yet conformed
character.'
